Maidstone Utd v Malgo 05.09.10

Maidstone Utd 1 – 2 Malgo Ladies

This was Malgo’s first game of the season, and time to find out if the pre-season’s efforts would pay off. Things however could not have got off to a worse start, when during warm-up, 7 mins before kick-off Malgo’s keeper Cooper injures her hand. Things went from bad to worse when on 3 mins Maidstone put in a looping cross into Malgo’s box. Golding had to deal with it and tried to head it wide past her own goal but the ball looped over Malgo stand-in keeper Freeman and into the net.

Malgo steadied themselves and got down to playing football with some good attacking play down Malgo’s left. Then on 12 mins Malgo switched the play to their right flank finding Hensman free who took on the Maidstone defender and found herself in on goal. Setting herself Hensman shot to the keepers left but the ball hit the post and bounced wide.

Malgo continued to pressure and on 15 mins France and Hensman broke through the Maidstone defence feeding a ball through to Seymour who shoots wide. On 17 mins Wallace dropped into midfield from her forward position and worked a one/two with Relph who crosses the ball into the Maidstone box to see France head wide.  Wallace and France continue to work hard to find a way through the Maidstone defence. Their hard work pays off on 22 mins when they are awarded a free kick 25 yards out from the Maidstone goal. France stepped up to take the kick and placed a looping free kick over the Maidstone keeper into the top right of their goal. Maidstone Utd 1 – 1 Malgo.

Malgo continued to enjoy a lot of possession but Maidstone had not given up the fight and battled to get themselves into the game. This pressure required some strong defending by Clarke, Brimsted, Golding and Gooderman to ensure the score at half time remained 1 – 1.

The second half saw Malgo’s only substitution with Zaborska coming on for Brimsted. Maidstone started the second half as they fished the first and pressured Malgo’s defence. Some good defending by Gooderman saw Maidstone win a corner on 50 mins.

Malgo slowly started to assert their authority on the game with good midfield play by Seymour and Relph. France and Wallace continued to pressure Maidstone’s defence supported by some great runs on both wings by Berry and Hensman. To relieve the pressure Maidstone reverted to the long ball over the top but Clarke and Zaborska were equal to this and dealt with this play well supported by Golding and Gooderman.

On 71 mins Wallace and Berry combine on the left from which Wallace broke and crossed in and ball which France worked hard to get on the end of and tap home Malgo’s second. Maidstone Utd 1 – 2 Malgo.

Malgo’s pressure was starting to show and Maidstone rarely managed to venture out of their half. As Maidstone got more bodies behind the ball this allowed Zaborska and Clarke to push forward and support Malgo’s attacking play, which saw shots cleared off the line and lobs by France and Zaborska that just cleared Maidstone’s goal.
