Rusthall Ladies V Malgo Ladies 16.01.11

Kent County Plate Competition – Qtr Final
Rusthall Ladies 2 – 1 Malgo Ladies

A last minute goal in extra time saw Rusthall progress to the semi final of the Kent County Plate competition ahead of Malgo Ladies.  Despite dominating possession and having the greater number of chances during the game, Malgo failed to make the most of the chances.  The first of Malgo’s chances came after 3 minutes when Maytum’s shot went over the bar from a Rusthall clearance.  There were a couple of nice link up passages of play for Malgo between Seymour/Golding then France/Berry but unfortunately the final ball in both instances was not quite good enough.  Rusthall were quick on the break and had a couple of half chances themselves, notably a freekick on 15 minutes from a good spot just outside the area which was taken by their keeper.  Unfortunately Malgo were unable to capitalise on the keeper being up the wrong end of the pitch and had a further couple of chances on 22 and 25 minutes when Relph’s promising run came to nothing and France had her shot from a Wallace through ball saved by the Rustall keeper.  Wallace’s own attempt on 27 minutes went inches past the post.  Malgo felt harshly done to when France was clearly obstructed on 34 minutes but no foul was given.   Malgo did manage to take the lead on 39 minutes when France’s cross was put in the back of the net by Berry who remained composed in front of goal in a crowded area.  Half time = 1-0 to Malgo.

Malgo came out quickly from the restart when Wallace crossed the ball after 1 minute but it was just too close to the keeper.  From the clearance Malgo failed to deal with the long ball over the top and Rusthall’s No 10 scored to make it 1-1.  It looked as if Rusthall had the bit between their teeth as they pushed hard for a second goal and Freeman was called to make a couple of good saves.  In an attempt to win the game, a double substitution saw Zaborska and Browning on for Brimstead and Gooderham.  Browning’s impact on the game was almost immediate when she played a great ball for Hensman (on for Seymour who went off with a hamstring 10 minutes before half time).    Despite a good start to the second half from Malgo, Rusthall players continued to defend well against shots from Hensman, Wallace and Berry and with the deadlock not broken, the game finished 1-1 at the end of normal time.

Again, Malgo started the first period of extra time strongly with France forcing the keeper to make a couple of good saves.  It was Rusthall who thought that they had gone ahead after 3 minutes when a speculative cross hit the post and the follow up strike was cleared by Freeman at point blank range.  The ball fell to Rusthall who fired the ball into the back of the net only for the referee to disallow it for the linesman’s offside flag.  The 1st period of extra time ended goaless.

Browning’s defensive work and good through ball to France at the start of the 2nd half was defended well by Rusthall and  neither Wallace nor Golding could reach the resulting corner cross from France.  Golding was also unlucky later when her dangerous cross wasn’t met by a Malgo head.  Following a long stoppage for an injury to Browning, Malgo’s defence was beaten by a long through ball and Rusthall’s forward powered the ball goal bound.  Malgo keeper Freeman could do nothing except try to palm the ball wide.  Although Freeman got a hand to it, the ball simply went high before dropping in the back of the net.  The final whistle went almost immediately from the restart.
